When you pick up or start a phone call in French, you say Allô. In a formal call, Bonjour is the safer opening. It is also called Oui, allô ?

The person who answers often says Allô ? or Oui, allô ? The caller may then say Allô, bonjour and ask for the person they want.
Is there a formal and an informal way to say it?
With a company, a doctor or someone you do not know, start with Bonjour and add a polite request such as Je voudrais parler à Monsieur Martin. With friends, Allô or Salut is fine.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Do not use Allô to greet someone face to face. In person, say Bonjour or Salut.
