What does it mean word for word?
The word is composed of vec (old) and māmiņa (little mother or mommy).

Is there a formal and an informal way to say it?

Did you know?
- In traditional Latvian folk songs, known as dainas, the figure of the grandmother is often portrayed as the primary keeper of oral history and herbal medicine.
- Latvians use the diminutive suffix -iņa not just for 'grandma' but to turn almost any noun into a term of endearment, creating a 'language of smallness' that signals intimacy.
- If you were to use the formal term vecmāte in a casual family setting, it might sound strangely clinical, almost as if you were discussing a biological specimen.
