In Mexico the everyday word for “beautiful” is bonito, with bonita for feminine nouns. Hermoso and precioso are stronger, and lindo is also very Mexican.

The heel of the foot is talón in Mexico. The raised heel of a shoe is tacón, and high heels are tacones. Say Me duele el talón for a sore heel.

In Mexico you can say Hola, hermano to a brother. Between friends the slang is ¿Qué onda, carnal?, where carnal means close friend or brother.

When someone sneezes in Mexico you say Salud, meaning “health”. A real blessing is Dios te bendiga, which is a separate phrase.

In Mexico the name is often kept as Emily, since many parents pick the English-style name. The traditional Spanish form is Emilia.

Golf is simply golf in Mexican Spanish, pronounced like the English word with a short o as golf.

In Mexico “thank you very much” is muchas gracias. For extra warmth people say Muchísimas gracias or the casual Mil gracias, literally “a thousand thanks”.

The playful Spanish “yay” is ¡Yupi! In Mexico people also cheer with ¡Qué padre! or the classic ¡Viva!, and kids often add ¡Sí! with a raised fist.

The word for squirrel is ardilla. It is the same in Mexico and in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world.

In Mexico a toothpick is a palillo or palillo de dientes. The more formal word is mondadientes.
