In Mexico a couch is a sillón or a sofá. People also say la sala for the whole living room set. Both sillón and sofá are everyday words.

In Mexico “silverware” is cubiertos. It covers the fork, knife and spoon, called tenedor, cuchillo and cuchara.

In Mexico “outside” is usually afuera. You say estoy afuera for “I am outside” and vamos afuera for “let us go outside”.

Brisket in Mexico is called pecho de res, literally “beef chest”. At barbecue places you may also see the English word brisket on the menu.

In Mexico the army is el ejército, and the official name of the national force is el Ejército Mexicano. The word is masculine.

In Mexico a small parrot is often a perico, and the general word loro works for bigger parrots. A macaw is a guacamaya.

Cinnamon is canela in Mexican Spanish. A stick is canela en rama, and the powder is canela molida.

In Mexico a sports coach is an entrenador (feminine entrenadora). In football people also say director técnico, often shortened to DT.

In Mexico people often say padrísimo for “terrific”, from padre meaning “cool”. Neutral options are buenísimo, increíble and estupendo.

In Mexico a baby is bebé. The same word is used for boys and girls, and warm forms are bebito for a boy and bebita for a girl.
