About Mexican Spanish

The guides in this category give Mexican Spanish, the Spanish spoken in Mexico. Mexico has more Spanish speakers than any other country, and its Spanish is also widely heard in the United States. It is fully understood by other Spanish speakers, but it has its own everyday words and many borrowings from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, such as chocolate and aguacate (avocado).

As elsewhere, usted is the polite "you" and tú the familiar one, and Mexicans use ustedes for "you" in the plural in every situation. A polite ¿Mande? is the usual way to ask someone to repeat what they said. Slang words that are friendly in Mexico can sound odd or rude in other Spanish-speaking countries, so check before you use them elsewhere. See also Spanish.
