In Mexico ice is hielo. You order a drink con hielo or sin hielo, and the piece of ice is a cubito de hielo or just a hielo.

The Spanish word depends on the meaning. For a silly person say tonto, for a store mannequin say maniquí, and for a baby pacifier Mexicans say chupón.

Mexicans say espada for “sword”, the same word used across Spanish. A curved sword such as a saber is a sable.

A nap is siesta in Mexican Spanish. To take one you say echarse una siesta or tomar una siesta. A small, cozy one is una siestecita.

To say “shut up” in Mexico you use cállate. With someone you address as usted it becomes cállese. Both are rude unless said as a joke with friends.

In Mexico a disco or nightclub is most often called an antro in slang. The neutral word is discoteca, and disco is also understood.

In Mexico say ¿Hablas inglés? to someone your age or younger and ¿Habla inglés? to someone you should address politely.

In Mexico “German” is alemán for a man or the language, and alemana for a woman. It is not capitalized in Spanish.

The word for “shoe” in Mexican Spanish is zapato. Sneakers are called tenis in Mexico and the word does not change in the singular.

In Mexican Spanish “poison” is veneno. The adjective “toxic” is tóxico, and the verb “to poison” is envenenar.
