Did you know?
- Although что is used for objects, if you ask что это? about a person, it can sound unintentionally rude or dehumanizing. You should use кто это? ('who is this?') instead.
- In casual speech, the 'o' in что is almost always pronounced as 'a', making the phrase sound like шта это? to an English ear.
- The word что shares an ancient ancestor with the English word 'what', both tracing back to Proto-Indo-European roots.
