что это?
chto eto?
To say "what is this?" in Russian, use что это? (chto eto?)
The phrase is used to ask for the identity or the name of an object.
What does it mean word for word?
The phrase is composed of что (what) and это (this/it).
How does it change in a sentence?
You can add такое (such/like this) to the end of the phrase to create что это такое? This makes the question more emphatic and is often used when expressing surprise or confusion about an object.
How do you pronounce it?
chto eto?
Did you know?
- While что это? asks about an object, if you want to ask 'who is this?' about a person, you must change что to кто. Using что for a human is considered very rude or dehumanizing.
- The word что shares an ancient ancestor with the English word 'what' and the Latin 'quid', tracing back to the same Proto-Indo-European root.
- If you hear что-что?, the doubled word is not a grammatical error but a common way to ask 'What was that?' or 'Could you repeat that?' when someone didn't hear correctly.
