Chicken as food is pollo in Mexican Spanish. A hen is a gallina, a rooster is a gallo, and a baby chick is a pollito.

In Mexico bolsa means a bag, a purse and also a pocket of your clothes. A handbag is bolsa de mano, and a plastic shopping bag is bolsa de plástico.

In Mexico both the drink and the place are called café. For a small, friendly coffee people say cafecito, and a shop that serves coffee is a cafetería.

In Mexico a cake is a pastel. A birthday cake is a pastel de cumpleaños, and a slice is a rebanada de pastel.

To tell someone to stand up in Mexico you say Levántate. Párate is also very common in Mexican speech, and Ponte de pie is a more careful way to say it.

In Mexico the restroom is the baño. On signs in restaurants, airports and malls you will often see sanitarios.

In Mexican Spanish beso means “kiss”, and it is spelled and said the same as in other Spanish. A small, tender kiss is a besito.

Boring in Mexican Spanish is aburrido. In casual talk Mexicans also say qué hueva, which is slang for “what a drag”.

In Mexico the state is written Texas and said “TEH-hahs”, with the x pronounced like a Spanish j. The spelling Tejas is also correct and matches the sound.
