buongiorno bellissima
The Italian phrase for "good morning beautiful" is buongiorno bellissima.
This is a romantic or affectionate greeting used in the morning directed toward a woman.
What does it mean word for word?
The phrase is composed of buongiorno (good day) and bellissima (the superlative form of beautiful, meaning "most beautiful" or "very beautiful").
Which one should you use?
Using bellissima instead of the standard adjective bella adds a higher degree of intensity, implying "good morning, most beautiful".
How does it change in a sentence?
While bellissima is a common superlative used for emphasis, bella is the standard adjective for "beautiful" and is also used in this greeting.
Did you know?
- The word giorno shares a common root with the English word 'journal', as both relate to the concept of a day or a daily record.
- If you wanted to be even more dramatic, you could use buon dì, an archaic and poetic way of saying 'good day' that sounds like something from an old opera.
- Despite being used for 'morning', buongiorno is often used throughout the entire day until about 4 PM or 5 PM, after which Italians switch to buonasera.
