Twi is the main form of Akan, the most widely spoken language of Ghana. It includes the Asante and Akuapem dialects, and it is used across the country in markets, music and radio, well beyond the Akan homeland in the south and centre. Fante, spoken on the coast, is another form of Akan, and a few guides here give Fante words.

Twi is a tonal language with high and low tones. It uses two extra letters: ɛ, like the e in "bed", and ɔ, like the o in "pot". Akwaaba (welcome) and medaase (thank you) are words you will hear every day. In Ghana it is polite to greet people before anything else and to give and receive things with the right hand.
