Plural

About the Plural guides

The guides in this category are about English plurals: how to write and say the plural of a word, from everyday nouns like city and army to scientific words and family names. They are English guides, not guides to another language.

Most English nouns add -s. Nouns ending in s, x, z, ch or sh add -es (box, boxes), and a consonant followed by y becomes -ies (city, cities). Many words taken from Latin and Greek keep their own plurals, such as bronchus and bronchi or synopsis and synopses. A family name takes -s or -es with no apostrophe, as in "the Joneses". For more on English itself, see the English guides.
