About Albanian

Albanian is the official language of Albania and Kosovo and an official language of North Macedonia. It forms its own branch of the Indo-European family, with no close relatives. There are two main dialect groups, Gheg in the north and Tosk in the south, and the standard written language is based mainly on Tosk.

Albanian is written in a Latin alphabet of 36 letters and is read much as it is spelled. A few letters surprise English speakers: ë is a soft vowel like the a in "sofa" and is often silent at the end of a word, c sounds like ts, ç like ch, xh like the j in "jam", q close to ch and dh like the th in "this". Use ju for a polite "you" and ti with friends.
