buonissimo
The English phrase 'very tasty' is translated into Italian as buonissimo.
buonissimo is used to describe food or drink that has a very pleasant flavor.
What does it mean word for word?
The word is the superlative form of buono (good), and it literally means 'extremely good'.
Which one should you use?
While molto buono also means 'very good/tasty', the single-word superlative buonissimo often sounds more natural and emphatic when praising food.
How does it change in a sentence?
The form of the word changes to match the gender and number of the food being described: use buonissima if the noun is feminine, buonissimi if the noun is masculine plural and buonissime if the noun is feminine plural.
Did you know?
- If a dish is so tasty that it is almost too much to handle, an Italian might use the expression da urlo, which literally translates to 'to scream for'. It is a much more visceral way to express that something is 'very tasty'.
- In Italy, you can express that food is buonissimo by making a 'chef's kiss' gesture, where you kiss your fingertips and then flick them away from your lips.
- When food is so buonissimo that it is almost unbelievable, an Italian might use the expression da leccarsi i baffi, which means 'enough to lick one's whiskers'.
