About Catalan

Catalan is spoken by about 4 million people as a first language and by about 5 million more as a second language. It is the only official language of Andorra and an official language, alongside Spanish, in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, where it is called Valencian. It is also spoken in southern France around Perpignan and in the town of Alghero in Sardinia. Catalan is a language of its own, not a dialect of Spanish.

Some Catalan letters sound different from Spanish: x is usually sh, ny is like the ny in "canyon" and ll is like the lli in "million". The dotted l·l is a longer l. Use vostè as the polite "you" with strangers and tu with friends. Bon dia means good morning. Almost everyone in Catalonia also speaks Spanish, but a few words in Catalan are always welcome.
