वीगन

Hindi has borrowed the English word as वीगन (vīgan). It is not the same as शाकाहारी (shākāhārī), vegetarian, because vegetarian food in India often includes milk and curd. It is also called शुद्ध शाकाहारी (shuddh shākāhārī).

At a restaurant, say मैं वीगन हूँ (maiṁ vīgan hūṁ), and then add दूध या दही नहीं (dūdh yā dahī nahīṁ), no milk or curd, to be understood well.

Many Indian vegetarian dishes use ghee, paneer or curd, so a clear explanation helps a server who may not know the word वीगन (vīgan).
