merci, mon ami
merci, mon ami is the French way to say thank you, friend.
This phrase is a friendly way to express gratitude to a male friend. While merci, mon ami is grammatically correct, it can sometimes sound slightly formal or cinematic in casual spoken French compared to just saying merci.
Which one should you use?
Use merci, mon amie instead of mon ami when addressing a female friend.
Did you know?
- The word merci originally referred to 'mercy' or a 'reward' rather than gratitude. It is derived from the Latin 'mercēdem', which means 'wages' or 'price'.
- While merci is the standard for gratitude, the phrase à merci is still used in French to describe being at someone's mercy or completely under their power.
- In very casual settings, French speakers often replace mon ami with slang terms like mon pote to avoid the formality associated with the word ami.
