ma vie
The English phrase "my life" is translated into French as ma vie.
ma vie refers to the period of time from a person's birth to their death, or the general experience of being alive.
What does it mean word for word?
The phrase is composed of the possessive adjective ma (my) and the feminine noun vie (life).
How does it change in a sentence?
Because vie is a feminine noun, the feminine possessive adjective ma must be used instead of the masculine mon.
Did you know?
- In certain poetic contexts, calling someone ma vie is a common, albeit very intense, way to say 'my everything' or 'my sweetheart'.
- The word vie is a linguistic cousin to the English word 'way' or 'road', as both traces back to the Latin 'via'.
- French speakers use the expression C'est la vie to express a fatalistic acceptance of a bad situation, which is rarely used by English speakers to describe their own 'my life' experience.
