I am a student in Russian is я студент (ya student) for a man, and a woman says я студентка.
студент means a student at a college or university. A school pupil is ученик instead.

Russian leaves out the verb to be in the present tense, so the phrase is literally I student. In writing a dash sometimes appears between the two words. A female speaker uses the feminine noun студентка.
