boîte de dialogue
The English phrase "chat box" is translated into French as boîte de dialogue.
In French, boîte de dialogue is the standard technical term used to describe a dialogue box on a computer screen. However, in modern web contexts, speakers often use the anglicism chat box or the phrase fenêtre de chat when specifically referring to instant messaging windows.
Which one should you use?
While boîte de dialogue is the standard technical term for a dialogue box, other forms are used for specific contexts. Fenêtre de chat is a common alternative used to describe a chat interface, and fenêtre de discussion can be used to mean a discussion window.
Did you know?
- While boîte means 'box', it is also the common French slang word for a 'nightclub'.
- The word boîte is a linguistic doublet of the English word 'box', as both descend from the same Latin roots involving the box tree.
- The use of fenêtre de chat is an example of a 'calque', where French keeps its grammar but borrows the English concept of 'chatting' online.
