spreek je Engels?
To say "can you speak English?" in Dutch, use spreek je Engels?
This phrase is a question used to ask if someone has the ability to communicate in the English language.
Which one should you use?
While kun je Engels spreken? is grammatically possible, spreek je Engels? is the more natural and common way to ask this question. This is because Dutch often omits the word for "can" in this specific question, using the present tense of spreken to imply the ability.
How does it change in a sentence?
The verb spreken changes its form depending on the subject. When using the informal je, you use spreek je Engels? When using the formal u, the verb changes to spreekt u Engels?
What mistakes should you avoid?
Always capitalize Engels. English speakers often forget to do this, but in Dutch, languages are always capitalized.
