About Dutch

Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands and Suriname, one of the official languages of Belgium and of the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, with about 23 million native speakers. The Dutch spoken in Belgium is often called Flemish. It differs in accent and some words but is the same language.

Use u for a polite "you" with strangers and older people, and jij or je with friends. The g and ch are made in the throat, close to the ch in Scottish "loch", and are softer in the south and in Belgium. oe sounds like the oo in "food", and ij and ei sound close to the ay in "day". A double vowel, as in maan (moon), is long.
