حيت introduces a reason in ordinary conversation, as in ماجيتش حيت كنت تعبان, 'I didn't come because I was tired'. على خاطر works the same way. The Standard Arabic لأن is understood but sounds bookish in speech.
What does it mean word for word?
حيت has no clear link to a Standard Arabic root, which is one of the words that gives Darija its own character. على خاطر literally means 'for the sake of', from خاطر, 'sake' or 'mind'.
Which one should you use?
حيت is the natural choice at any register in daily talk. على خاطر sounds a touch more deliberate. لأن belongs in writing, news and formal speech, not casual conversation.
Is there a formal and an informal way to say it?
None of the three words change with politeness. Darija has no separate formal verb forms, so the whole sentence stays the same.
