About Maltese

Maltese is the national language of Malta and, with English, one of its two official languages. It is also an official language of the European Union. Nearly everyone in Malta speaks it, and communities in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom still use it.

Maltese grew from the Arabic spoken in Sicily and Malta in the Middle Ages and took in many Italian and English words. It is the only Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet. ċ sounds like the ch in "church", ġ like the j in "jam", x like sh and ħ like a strong h. q is a catch in the throat, and għ is usually silent but lengthens the vowel next to it.
