Bhojpuri is spoken by about 52 million people as a first language in western Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh in India and in southern Nepal. Workers who left the region in the 19th century took it to Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana and Trinidad, where it is still heard. Bhojpuri films and songs are popular across north India.
