About Bengali

Bengali, Bangla in the language itself, is the national language of Bangladesh and an official language of the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura, with about 240 million native speakers. It is one of the most spoken languages in the world and has a long literary tradition, including the work of Rabindranath Tagore.

Bengali has three words for "you". Use apni with strangers and older people, tumi with friends and family and tui only with very close friends or children. It is written in its own script, the Bengali script, which runs left to right with a line along the top of each word. In many Latin spellings the short vowel written a sounds close to the o in "hot".
