¿Qué te sirvo?
The English phrase "what can I get for you?" can be translated into Spanish as ¿Qué te sirvo?
This phrase is a standard and natural way for a server to initiate an order in many Spanish-speaking countries. It is specifically used by a server or host to ask a customer or guest what they would like to eat or drink.
What does it mean word for word?
The phrase literally translates to "What do I serve you?", where sirvo is the first-person singular present tense of servir (to serve).
Which one should you use?
The default form ¿Qué te sirvo? uses the informal tú and is appropriate for casual settings like a cafe or a bar with young customers.
Did you know?
- The word servir comes from the Latin 'servire', which means 'to be a slave'. This reflects an ancient social hierarchy that has evolved into the modern professional term for hospitality.
- While ¿Qué te sirvo? is common, you may hear ¿Qué te pongo? in Spanish bars. The verb poner means 'to put' or 'to place', implying the server is placing the drink on the counter for you.
- The word te in this phrase comes from the Latin accusative pronoun tē, which has remained remarkably stable for thousands of years. This means the way you address 'you' in this sentence is almost identical to how it was used in ancient Rome.
