The verb is a compound formed by the noun यात्रा, journey and the verb करना, to do.

While यात्रा is the standard term for travel, सफ़र is a very common Urdu-derived word used in everyday spoken Hindi for a journey or trip. Yaatra can also mean a specific journey, pilgrimage or tour. Pravas denotes a trip undertaken for a specific purpose. सियाहत is another noun for travel.
