To snuggle means to lie close to another person or thing, hugging or being cosy. In French, you can use se blottir to mean 'to nestle', se pelotonner to describe curling up or se lover to mean 'to curl up' or 'to nestle against someone'.
Which one should you use?
The choice of word depends on the nuance you wish to convey. se blottir (contre) is the most common way to express snuggling against a person or an object. se pelotonner specifically emphasizes the physical act of curling one's body into a ball or a tight shape. se lover is more poetic or literary and is often used to describe animals (like a cat) or a person curling up comfortably, suggesting a fluid, winding motion.
Did you know?
- In the world of professional cycling, a peloton is the main pack of riders. This creates a linguistic link between the act of snuggling and a tight group of cyclists racing together.
- The word se lover is not originally French, but was borrowed in the 17th century from a North Sea Germanic language, such as Low German or East Frisian.
- Because se lover is considered literary, using it in a casual text message might seem overly romantic or dramatic to a native speaker.
Examples in context
- Les amoureux aimaient se lover l'un contre l'autre près de la cheminée.The lovers enjoyed snuggling up next to each other by the fireplace.
- Elle se blottit contre lui.She snuggles against him.
