How do you pronounce it?
/klabes/
Did you know?
- The word claves is the plural of clave, which means 'key' in Spanish. In a musical context, the sticks are seen as the 'keys' that unlock the timing for the rest of the ensemble.
- In some classical music contexts in Spanish, 'claves' can also refer to 'clefs' (like treble or bass clef), creating a potential confusion for students of both music and language.
- In many Spanish-speaking musical contexts, the term claves refers not just to the wooden sticks, but to the specific rhythmic pattern they play, which is the foundation of many genres.
