How to Say “Neji” in Japanese

ネジ
The Japanese phrase neji means neji (phrase).
The term refers to both screws and bolts in general Japanese usage. In the Naruto anime series, Neji Hyuga's name is written as 日向ネジ.

Did you know?

  • The word neji can be used metaphorically in the phrase neji wo shimeru, which literally means 'to tighten the screw' but actually means to brace oneself or get focused.
  • Although neji is written in katakana as ネジ on many technical labels, it can be written in kanji as 螺子. These characters are so rare that most modern Japanese people cannot read them without help.
  • The kanji for neji 螺 is the same character used in the word for 'snail' katatsumuri when written as 螺. Both words share the visual concept of a spiral.
