Je suis polonais
To say "I am polish" in French, you say Je suis polonais.
This phrase is used to state that a person is of Polish nationality. It serves as a basic and neutral way to express your nationality in French.
Which one should you use?
The phrase Je suis polonais uses the adjective form to describe your nationality. This differs from Je suis un Polonais, which translates to "I am a Pole". Additionally, you may also use Je viens de Pologne to say "I come from Poland", which can be used to indicate Polish nationality in a formal manner.
How does it change in a sentence?
The form of the phrase changes based on the gender of the speaker. If the speaker is female, the adjective must change to the feminine form Je suis polonaise.
Did you know?
- The word suis in this phrase is an oddity because it deviates from the expected evolution of the Latin 'sum'. It was likely influenced by the Latin 'fuī', which actually means 'I was'.
- The word polonais is a cognate of the English 'Polish', but it is also related to the 'Polonius' character in Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', whose name was chosen to sound specifically foreign and pompous.
- While Je suis polonais denotes nationality, French speakers use être d'origine polonaise to specifically highlight their ancestral roots regardless of their current citizenship.
Examples in context
