Grammy
In French, Grammy refers to the prestigious award given to recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry.
Which one should you use?
While Grammy refers to the music award, the word grand-mère is used when you mean 'grandmother'.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Do not use Grammy to refer to a grandmother. Use grand-mère instead.
Did you know?
- To describe winning a Grammy, French speakers use the verb décrocher, which literally means 'to unhook'. This creates the imagery of seizing or capturing the trophy.
- While Grammy is used for the award, the affectionate term for 'grandmother' in French is often Mamie, which sounds similar to the English 'Grammy'.
- Because Grammy is an English proper noun, French media will often use the article les before it, referring to them as les Grammy.
