About Khmer

Khmer, also called Cambodian, is the official language of Cambodia, with about 17 million native speakers. It is also spoken in parts of northeastern Thailand and southern Vietnam.

Khmer has its own script, which comes from the scripts of ancient India and is related to Thai and Lao writing. Latin spellings of Khmer vary a lot, since there is no single agreed system. Unlike its neighbours Thai, Lao and Vietnamese, Khmer is not tonal. The polite greeting is chum reap suor, said with the palms pressed together at chest level. To address someone a little older than you in a friendly, respectful way, call them bong (older sibling).
