Hausa

About Hausa

Hausa is spoken as a first language by about 44 million people, mainly in northern Nigeria and southern Niger, and by many more as a second language. It is a major language of trade across much of West Africa. It belongs to the Chadic branch of the Afroasiatic family.

Hausa is written in Latin letters, called boko, with hooked letters such as ɓ, ɗ and ƙ for sounds English lacks. An older tradition writes it in Arabic script, called ajami. Hausa is tonal, but tones are not marked in everyday spelling. Greetings matter in Hausa, and a common one is sannu (hello).
