About Armenian

Armenian is the official language of Armenia and forms its own branch of the Indo-European family, with no close relatives. A large part of the Armenian-speaking world lives outside Armenia, in Russia, the United States, France, Lebanon and elsewhere.

There are two standard forms. Eastern Armenian is used in Armenia and by Armenians from Iran, and Western Armenian by most of the diaspora whose families came from what is now Turkey. They differ in pronunciation and some grammar, so the same phrase may be spelled or said differently from guide to guide. Armenian has its own alphabet, created by Mesrop Mashtots in the early 5th century. Use duk as the polite "you" and du with friends. Barev means hello.
