The default form ¿Por qué hablas español? often implies a question about a person's general ability or the reason they know the language. If you want to specifically ask why someone is in the middle of a Spanish conversation at this very moment, use the continuous form ¿Por qué estás hablando español?

To use the formal "you" when asking this question, replace hablas with habla and add the pronoun usted to form ¿Por qué habla usted español? (or ¿Por qué está hablando usted español?). If you are asking a group of people why they are speaking Spanish, use the plural form están hablando instead of hablas.
