In many Chinese-speaking regions, the word for the bird 'turkey' is completely different from the country name 土耳其. The bird is often called 火鸡 which literally means 'fire chicken'.
Because 土耳其 is purely phonetic, the individual characters 土, 耳 and 其 do not combine to mean 'Turkey'. In isolation, they mean 'earth', 'ear' and 'its/that' respectively.
The first recorded use of 土耳其 to refer to the country appeared in Chinese literature as early as 1820.
