In Puerto Rico the most common word for sweetheart is mi amor. Cariño and mi vida are also very common.

Couples use these words, but parents, grandparents and even shop assistants may say mi amor to anyone they treat kindly. It does not always mean romance.
Which one should you use?
Cariño is gentler and used with partners and kids. Mi vida is deeper, like “my life”. Corazón and cielo are other warm choices.

With children, Puerto Ricans often say nene (boy) or nena (girl) as a pet name.
