Thrombozyten
The English phrase "platelets" is translated into German as Thrombozyten.
The term refers to small, colorless blood cells that help the blood to clot.
Is it said differently in some regions?
In Swiss German, you can use the informal term Blutplättlis to refer to platelets.
Did you know?
- While Thrombozyten is the scientific term, German speakers often use the colloquial Blutplättchen in everyday conversation, which literally translates to 'little blood plates'.
- In a medical setting, if a doctor says your Thrombozytenwerte are low, they are specifically referring to your platelet count. The word Werte translates to 'values' but is the standard way to discuss laboratory results.
- Because Thrombozyten is a loanword from Greek, it follows different phonetic patterns than native Germanic words. German speakers treat it as a formal, technical term rather than a descriptive one.
Examples in context
- Können Sie meine Thrombozytenwerte überprüfen? Can you check my platelet count?
- Die Thrombozyten helfen bei der Blutgerinnung. The platelets help with blood clotting.
