Which one should you use?
While Darf ich? asks for permission, the phrase Kann ich? (Can I?) focuses on your ability or the possibility of doing something. If you want to be even more polite, you can use Könnte ich? (Could I? Or Might I?) or the very formal Würden Sie mir erlauben? (Would you allow me?).
