te quiero abuela
/te kjeɾo abwela/from spelling rules
To say "I love you grandma" in Spanish, you use te quiero abuela.
This phrase is an expression of affection used to tell one's grandmother that they love her.
What does it mean word for word?
Literally, te quiero translates to "I want you", but in the context of family and friends, it is the standard way to say "I love you".
Is it said differently in some regions?
The term Abuelita is a regional variation of Abuela meaning "Granny" or "Little Grandma".
How does it change in a sentence?
In written Spanish, a comma should separate the verb phrase from the person being addressed (the vocative), such as in te quiero, abuela. Adding the diminutive suffix -ita to abuela makes the phrase sound more tender and affectionate.

- While te quiero is the standard for grandmothers, using te amo can feel intensely dramatic or poetic in some Spanish-speaking cultures, as it is often reserved for soulmates or religious devotion.
- In many Hispanic cultures, children are taught to greet their abuela with a beso on the cheek, regardless of their age.
- The word abuela is derived from the Late Latin aviola, which was already a diminutive form of the word for grandmother.
