hola, soy Dora
The English phrase "hi, I'm dora" is translated into Spanish as hola, soy Dora.
This phrase is a greeting used when introducing oneself to another person.
What does it mean word for word?
The phrase contains the word soy, which is the first-person singular present indicative form of the verb ser (to be), meaning "I am".
Which one should you use?
When introducing yourself by name, you use soy to indicate your permanent identity. You would not use estoy (the other form of "to be") for this purpose.
How does it change in a sentence?
In the phrase hola, soy Dora, the subject pronoun yo (I) is omitted because the verb conjugation soy already indicates that the subject is "I".
Did you know?
- In many Spanish-speaking cultures, the verbal introduction soy Dora is often accompanied by a light kiss on each cheek or a single kiss, depending on the country.
- The greeting hola may actually be a descendant of a command used to hail a ferryman or to tell someone to stop, rather than a word meant for a friendly hello.
- Depending on the region, you might hear soy replaced with me llamo, which literally means 'I call myself'.
