los geht's
The German phrase for "here we go" is los geht's.
los geht's is a common way to say "here we go". While it can translate to "here we go", it is more frequently used as an enthusiastic command or exclamation meaning "let's get started" or "let's go".

What does it mean word for word?

The phrase is a contraction of los geht es, where los means "off/away" and geht es means "it goes".

How does it change in a sentence?

The phrase uses the impersonal pronoun es (it) rather than wir (we), even though it is translated as "here we go".

  • The word los shares an ancient linguistic ancestor with the English word 'loose'. In both languages, the roots relate to the idea of being released or set free.
  • The phrase los geht's can be used sarcastically when something predictably bad begins to happen. In this context, it mirrors the English 'here we go again'.
  • The word los is so versatile that it also appears in the expression Was ist los?, meaning 'What is going on?' Here, it refers to a state of activity or disruption rather than a movement.
