¿vives aquí?
The English phrase "do you live here?" is translated into Spanish as ¿vives aquí?
This phrase is a question used to ask if someone resides in the current location. An alternative way to express this is ¿vives en este lugar?, which means "do you live in this place?"
What does it mean word for word?
The word vives means "you live" and is the second-person singular present indicative form of the verb vivir (to live).
Which one should you use?
The default form ¿vives aquí? is the informal version. If you are addressing a group of two or more people, you should use the plural form ¿viven aquí?
How does it change in a sentence?
Use ¿vive usted aquí? when you wish to show respect or are speaking to a stranger. Use ¿viven aquí? if you are asking a group of two or more people if they live in the current location.
Did you know?
- While vivir means 'to live', Spanish uses a completely different verb, estar vivo, to describe the state of being alive rather than dead.
- The word aquí is a linguistic hybrid derived from the Vulgar Latin combination of eccum, meaning 'this', and hīc, meaning 'here'.
- In some Spanish-speaking cultures, asking ¿vives aquí? to a stranger can be seen as intrusive, often requiring a soft greeting first to avoid appearing overly direct.
