How to Say "Coffee Black" in Spanish

café solo

/kaˌfe ˈsolo/

The English phrase "coffee black" is translated into Spanish as café solo.

You use café solo to order or describe coffee that is served without any milk or cream.

What does it mean word for word?

The phrase literally translates to "coffee alone", where solo means alone or only.

While café solo refers to black coffee, the term café con leche is the standard way to order coffee with milk.

In some regions, the colloquial expression café puro is used to refer to black coffee.

/kaˌfe ˈsolo/

The word café shares a common ancestor with the Arabic word qahwa, which originally referred to a type of wine before being used to describe coffee.
If you order a café solo in a traditional Spanish bar, it is often served with a small glass of water on the side to cleanse the palate.
In many Spanish-speaking countries, ordering café solo might result in a very small, intense shot of espresso rather than a standard cup of brewed coffee.
