Kunstfach
The English phrase "art subject" is translated into German as Kunstfach.
Kunstfach refers to a course of study focused on the arts, typically within a school or college curriculum. You may also see the phrase Kunst als Schulfach used to specify that art is being discussed specifically as a formal school subject.
What does it mean word for word?
The word Kunstfach is a compound noun made of Kunst, meaning "art" and Fach, meaning "subject", "field" or "department".
Which one should you use?
You can use Kunstkurs to refer specifically to an art course or class. In casual school contexts, you can simply use Kunst to refer to the subject itself (for example, saying "I have art now").
How does it change in a sentence?
Kunstfach is a neuter noun, as shown by the definite article das. The plural form of Kunstfach is Kunstfächer.
Did you know?
- The word Kunst is related to the English word 'cunning', as both derive from an ancient root meaning 'to know' or 'to be able to'.
- While Fach translates to 'subject', it also means 'compartment' or 'shelf', reflecting a historical view of academic disciplines as separate drawers of knowledge.
- While English uses 'art' as a broad category, German often distinguishes between Kunst (fine arts) and Gestaltung (design or creative arts) in school curricula.
