Which one should you use?
While the default form asks if someone is 'from' the United States, other variations can ask if they are 'American' (¿Eres estadounidense?), if they 'come from' the country (¿Vienes de los Estados Unidos?) or if they are 'originally from' the country (¿Es usted originario de los Estados Unidos?). There are also versions that ask if someone is 'of American origin' (¿Eres de origen estadounidense?).

In Spain, you can use the informal ¿Eres de Estados Unidos? or the formal ¿Es usted de Estados Unidos? In Argentina, the informal way to ask is ¿Sos de Estados Unidos?
